Cabinet Painting
Refinishing kitchen cabinets changes how a kitchen looks for a fraction of what replacing it costs — and unlike an exterior, it can be done properly in the middle of a Calgary January.
A great many houses here came with medium-stain oak or maple cabinetry that is structurally excellent and visually dated. The boxes are sound, the drawers run properly, the layout works. The only real problem is the colour, and that is exactly the problem refinishing solves.
Doors and drawer fronts come off, get degreased, sanded, primed with a bonding primer matched to the substrate, and sprayed — the only way to get the even, brush-mark-free surface expected on a door face viewed from a foot away. Boxes and frames are finished in place. A typical kitchen runs one to two weeks, most of it coatings hardening rather than people working, and you keep the use of your kitchen for nearly all of it.
The step that decides how long it lasts is degreasing. Kitchen doors carry an invisible film of cooking residue around the stove and every handle. Coat over it and the paint bonds to grease rather than the door — perfect on handover, chipping within months. Where boxes have swollen from a leak, or what you actually want is a different layout, we will tell you paint is the wrong answer.

Exterior Painting
Stucco, siding, trim, fascia, soffits and exterior doors. An exterior coating is not decoration — it is the layer keeping water and UV off the material underneath, and in Calgary it works hard.
The exterior season runs roughly May to September. What governs the work is surface temperature, the drying window before rain, and the overnight low — that last one catches people out, because a mild afternoon dropping near freezing after dark can stop a coat forming its film. We will not paint an exterior in winter.
Because of repeated freeze-thaw cycling, most of an exterior job goes on sealing the routes water uses to get in — failed caulking, gaps around frames, unprotected end grain on trim.

Preparation Makes the Difference
Almost every paint job that fails early fails for the same handful of reasons, and none of them are the paint. They are shortcuts taken before it went on. This is the part of a quote worth comparing.
Wall repair and patching
Nail holes and dents filled, larger damage cut back and patched rather than skimmed over. A repair that has not been feathered wide leaves a visible edge no finish coat hides.
Sanding
Two jobs at once: it flattens filler back to the plane of the wall, and it gives slick surfaces something to grip. Old semi-gloss trim and enamelled doors are too smooth for paint to bond to — skip the scuff-sand and the new coat peels off the first time something catches it.
Caulking
The thin dark shadow line where baseboard meets wall makes a room read as unfinished even when the paint is fine. Sealing those gaps costs very little and changes how the whole room looks.
Priming
Filler is far more porous than the wall around it. Paint straight over a patch and it absorbs differently, leaving a dull halo once the light hits it. Water stains, smoke and marker bleed through finish paint coat after coat until they are sealed with a blocking primer.
Surface protection
Floors covered, furniture moved and wrapped, fixtures and outlets masked — before any lid comes off, not after something has been spilled.
Clean lines and proper coats
Edges cut in by hand, and two finish coats as standard. Be wary of one-coat coverage offered as a selling point — it works occasionally on a same-colour refresh, but as a policy it is where thin, streaky finishes come from. Recoating before the previous coat has dried traps solvent and causes roller drag, which makes expensive paint behave like cheap paint.

Dry indoor air. Once the furnace has run through a cold stretch, indoor humidity drops a long way. Wet coats skin over faster than the product expects, which shortens open time and makes holding a wet edge across a long wall or ceiling harder.
Chinooks and movement. Temperatures swing dramatically within a day and building materials move in response. It is why drywall cracks recur in the same places here — the corners of door and window openings, and along ceiling seams. A crack filled three times needs the joint addressed, not more filler.
Freeze-thaw and sun. Moisture behind an exterior coating expands every time it freezes, and we get many such cycles — the reason exterior prep focuses on sealing. High-altitude UV then fades south and west elevations years before the sheltered sides.
