Drywall Repair in Calgary
Cracks, nail pops, holes and water damage repaired, feathered and primed — so the paint that follows has a flat surface to sit on.

House Painters Calgary carries out drywall repair for homeowners and property managers across Calgary, Alberta. We handle it as what it actually is — the preparation stage of a painting job. Cracks, nail pops, holes and water-damaged board are repaired, blended and primed so that the finish coat has something flat to sit on.
Repair belongs before paint, not instead of it
Almost every drywall repair we do exists because someone wants a room to look right. That is worth stating plainly, because it shapes how the work should be done: a repair is not finished when the compound is sanded. It is finished when it has been primed and painted and you cannot find it.
This is also why we quote drywall separately from painting rather than folding it in. A quote that buries repair inside a general painting figure either pads every job or turns into a change order the moment someone looks behind the furniture. Showing it as its own line lets you decide what is worth doing now.
We are painters who repair drywall properly — not a general drywall contractor. Boarding out a new basement or hanging and taping a whole extension is a different trade, and we will say so rather than take work we are not the right people for.
What we repair
- Cracks — particularly the recurring ones at the corners of door and window openings and along ceiling seams.
- Nail pops — the small round bumps that appear as framing dries and shrinks. Very common in newer builds.
- Holes — door handles through walls, furniture damage, removed fixtures and old anchor points.
- Water damage — once the source is fixed and the area is genuinely dry.
- Failed tape and corner beads — seams that have lifted, and damaged external corners.
- Previous poor repairs — patches that were never feathered or primed and now show through the paint.
Repairs are followed by interior painting or ceiling painting as appropriate — quoted alongside, so you can see both parts.
Got cracks that keep coming back?
Send us a photo. We can usually tell from an image whether it is a filler job or a joint that needs proper attention.
What separates a repair you can see from one you cannot
Feathering. The single biggest giveaway of an amateur patch is a repair with a visible edge. Compound has to be built up in coats and feathered out well beyond the damage, so the transition to the original surface is gradual enough that light does not catch it.
Building up in coats. Filling a deep repair in one pass means the compound shrinks as it dries and cracks or dishes. Several thinner coats, each allowed to dry, is slower and is the only way to get a stable flat result.
Priming every patch. Joint compound is far more porous than the painted wall around it. Paint straight over it and the patch absorbs differently, leaving a dull halo that only appears once the wall dries and the light hits it. Every repair gets primed.
Fixing the cause. A crack that has been filled three times and keeps returning is not a filler problem. It is a joint responding to movement, and it needs the joint itself addressed.
How a repair is done
Slower than filling a hole, and the reason the result disappears.
-
Diagnosis
We work out what caused the damage. A recurring crack and a one-off knock need completely different repairs, and treating them the same is why cracks come back.
-
Preparation and protection
The area is protected and contained. Drywall sanding produces fine dust that travels, so containment matters more here than on most painting work.
-
Cutting back
Loose, crumbling or water-affected material is removed back to something sound. Filling over failed material simply delays the problem.
-
Patching and taping
The repair is made with backing where needed, taped, and built up in coats rather than filled in one pass, which is what causes shrinkage cracks.
-
Sanding and feathering
Each coat is sanded and the edges feathered wide, so the repair blends into the surrounding surface rather than sitting proud of it.
-
Texture matching and priming
Where the surface is textured, the texture is matched. Every repair is primed — bare compound absorbs differently and shows as a flat halo otherwise.
Why drywall moves in Calgary
Calgary homes crack in predictable places, and the climate is a large part of the reason. Chinooks swing the temperature dramatically within a day, and indoor humidity drops a long way once the furnace has been running through a cold stretch. Building materials expand and contract in response, and the stress concentrates at the weakest points — the corners of door and window openings, and along ceiling seams.
Newer builds bring a different pattern: nail pops appearing across walls and ceilings in the first few years as framing lumber dries out and shrinks away from the fasteners. It is cosmetic rather than structural, and it is entirely normal.
Older inner-city properties bring plaster rather than drywall, which behaves differently and needs a different approach — harder, more brittle, and unforgiving of the wrong technique.
What affects the price
Repairs are quoted after seeing them, or from a clear photo. The cause of the damage often matters more than its size.
| What we look at | Why it changes the number |
|---|---|
| Number and size of repairs | Several small patches in one room is efficient. The same number scattered across a house is not, because each area needs its own setup and protection. |
| Cause of the damage | A one-off hole is straightforward. A recurring crack needs the joint addressed properly, which is more work than filling it again. |
| Texture | Flat walls are simpler. Matching stipple, knockdown or a skip-trowel finish takes skill and time, and a perfect match is not always achievable. |
| Water damage | Affected material usually needs cutting out and replacing rather than filling, and the area must be genuinely dry before any repair starts. |
| Access and height | Ceiling repairs and work in stairwells or open-to-above spaces need staging and are slower. |
| Painting after | A repair is only finished once it is primed and painted. Repainting the affected wall or room is quoted alongside the repair. |
Repair and painting are always shown as separate lines, so you can see what each costs and decide the scope yourself.

Why work with us on repairs
- We diagnose before we fill. A recurring crack gets treated as a movement problem, not a filler problem.
- Repairs are feathered wide and primed, so they disappear under paint rather than showing as a halo.
- Quoted separately from painting, so nothing becomes a mid-job change order.
- Dust is contained, and the house is protected properly.
- We tell you when it is not our trade. Full boarding and taping is a different job.
Drywall repair questions
What people ask before booking repair work.
Do you do drywall repair on its own, or only with painting?
We do it as preparation for painting, which is where it belongs — a repair is only finished once it is primed and painted to match. We will take on repair-only work, but be aware that an unpainted patch is not a completed job, and the finish coat is what makes a repair disappear.
Why does the same crack keep coming back?
Because filler alone does not fix a moving joint. Cracks that reappear in the same place — typically at the corners of door and window openings, or along a ceiling seam — are responding to building movement. Fixing them properly means addressing the joint itself, not applying more compound.
What are nail pops and are they serious?
Nail pops are small round bumps or holes where a fastener has pushed through the drywall surface as the framing behind it dried and shrank. They are cosmetic rather than structural, very common in newer builds, and straightforward to fix — the fastener is refixed, then the spot is filled, sanded and primed.
Can you repair water-damaged drywall?
Yes, once the source of the water has been dealt with and the area is properly dry. Patching over damp drywall traps the problem. Where material has lost integrity or shows growth, it needs cutting out and replacing rather than filling.
Will the repair be invisible?
On a flat wall, a well-executed repair that is properly feathered, sanded and primed should not be visible under normal lighting. Textured surfaces are harder, because the texture has to be matched as well as the surface — we will be honest at the estimate about how close a match is achievable.
