Why finish a garage at all
A great many Calgary garages were handed over with the drywall hung and taped and nothing else. It is a reasonable place for a builder to stop, and it leaves a space that is dim, dusty and unpleasant to use for anything more than parking.
Finishing it changes that in three practical ways. A light-coloured coating makes an enormous difference to how bright the space is, which matters in a room with one small window and a north-facing door. A sealed surface stops bare drywall shedding dust onto everything stored against it. And a washable finish means road salt, mud and the general grime of a Calgary winter can be wiped off rather than absorbed.
It is also one of the cheaper improvements available. There is no furniture to work around, no colour consultation to agonise over, and the standard of finish required is functional rather than showroom.
What garage painting includes
- Walls — bare, taped or previously painted.
- Ceilings — often the dirtiest surface and the one most worth doing; see ceiling painting.
- Trim and service doors — the door through to the house, and any window trim.
- Repairs — holes from old shelving, damaged corners and unfinished tape seams.
Preparation includes cleaning, filling, sanding and priming bare drywall. Where the boarding was never taped and finished properly, that is drywall work and is quoted separately.
We do not take on garage floor coatings. Floor work needs moisture testing and mechanical surface preparation, and it is a specialty we would rather point you elsewhere for than do badly.
Garage still bare drywall?
It is usually a one to two day job and one of the cheapest improvements you can make to a house.
What a garage needs that a living room does not
A tougher coating. Garage walls get knocked by bikes, tools, ladders and car doors. A standard interior wall paint will mark and scuff quickly. A durable, scrubbable finish holds up far better and costs very little more.
Priming bare drywall properly. Unfinished board and taped seams absorb at completely different rates. Paint applied straight over them gives a blotchy result where every joint shows through, and adding coats does not fix it — only priming does.
Real cleaning first. Garage surfaces carry road salt residue, exhaust film and construction dust. All of it prevents adhesion, and none of it is obvious to look at.
Temperature control. This is the constraint that catches people out in Calgary, and it decides when the job can happen at all.

The space needs to be reasonably clear. We protect the floor, any shelving that stays, and anything that cannot be moved out.

Garage walls collect dust, road salt residue and exhaust film. Cleaning them is not optional if the coating is going to bond.

Holes, dents and damaged corners filled and sanded. Bare taped joints made good where the drywall was never finished.

Bare drywall and taped seams are primed. Skipping this is why unprimed garage walls look blotchy no matter how many coats go on.

Temperature, and when a garage can be painted
A garage is the one interior space in a Calgary home that behaves partly like an exterior. Coatings still need to be applied and dried within their stated temperature range, and an unheated garage in the depths of winter is nowhere near it — the coating will not form a proper film, and no amount of careful application fixes that.
An attached garage that shares heat with the house, or one with its own heater, can usually be brought up to a workable temperature and held there through application and drying. That makes it a perfectly reasonable winter job. A detached, unheated garage generally needs the warmer months.
There is also a moisture consideration specific to here. Vehicles come in carrying snow and road salt, which melts and raises humidity considerably in a closed garage. Surfaces need to be genuinely dry before coating, which sometimes means keeping the car outside for a day or two.
What affects the price
Garages are quoted after a look. Size and current wall condition drive most of it.

If the garage is currently bare drywall, expect priming across the full surface to form part of the quote. It is what makes the difference between a finished-looking space and a patchy one.

What people ask before booking garage work.
Is garage painting different from painting inside the house?
Yes, mainly because of the environment. A Calgary garage swings through a much wider temperature range than a living room, often has bare or unfinished drywall, and gets knocked by tools, bikes and vehicles. It wants a durable, washable coating rather than a standard wall finish.
Can you paint a garage in winter?
Only if the garage can be brought up to and held at a workable temperature through application and drying. An attached, heated garage is often fine. An unheated detached garage in January is not — the coating will not form a proper film.
Do you paint garage floors?
Floor coatings are a different specialty with their own preparation requirements, including moisture testing and mechanical surface preparation. Our garage work covers walls, ceilings and trim. We would rather tell you that plainly than take on floor work we are not set up to do properly.
Does bare drywall in a garage need priming?
Yes. Bare drywall and taped joints are porous and absorb unevenly, so a finish coat applied directly over them looks patchy. Priming first is what gives an even final appearance, and it is included as standard.
How long does a garage take?
A standard double garage is usually one to two days depending on the wall condition, how much needs filling first, and how much of the space has to be cleared and protected before work starts.
