What a fence is actually up against
A fence gets no shelter at all. There is no eave over it, no wall behind it, and no drainage designed around it. It takes sun on one side and shade on the other, wind-driven rain and snow, and it sits with its posts in ground that freezes and thaws repeatedly through a Calgary winter.
That combination shows up in a predictable way. The sunny side greys and dries out. The shaded side stays damp longer and grows a green film. The bottom boards, closest to splashback and snow accumulation, deteriorate faster than the top. Posts fail at ground level, where wet and dry meet.
Coating the fence is what slows all of it down. It is far cheaper to keep a fence sealed than to replace a run of boards or reset a post that has rotted at grade.
Stain or paint on a fence?
For wood fencing, stain is generally the more practical choice, for the same reason it is on a deck: it penetrates rather than forming a film. As it weathers it fades, so recoating later means cleaning and reapplying rather than stripping.
Paint gives a solid, opaque colour and can look excellent, particularly on a front fence that is part of the look of the house. The trade-off is what happens at the end of its life. A painted fence that has begun to peel has to be prepared thoroughly before it can be recoated, and on a long run that is a significant amount of work.
If your fence has already been painted, that largely settles it — stripping a whole run back to bare wood is rarely proportionate. We will tell you which situation you are in and what each option means for the next time round.

Fence work is weather-dependent and the season is short. Getting a quote early means getting a slot.
The practical details worth sorting first
Which sides. Most fences are shared. Doing the far side normally needs your neighbour's agreement and access to their yard, and it roughly doubles the surface. Sorting this out before we quote saves revisiting the price later.
Landscaping. Planting tight against a fence has to be protected or tied back, and beds directly beneath need covering. The more access there is along the run, the faster and cheaper the work.
The wood has to be dry. This is the constraint that governs scheduling. After rain, or after we wash the fence, the boards need to dry through — not just feel dry to the hand. Finish applied over damp wood does not penetrate and does not last.
New fences often need to wait. Fresh pressure-treated boards usually need time to dry and weather before they will take a finish properly. We would rather tell you to wait than take money for a coat that will not penetrate.

Fence work in the Calgary season
Roughly May to September, and within that, only on days when conditions genuinely suit. Fence work has less flexibility than most exterior painting because there is nowhere sheltered to retreat to — the whole job is exposed.
Alberta sun and freeze-thaw are the two forces doing the damage. High -altitude UV breaks down the surface fibre on the exposed side, and every freeze cycle moves whatever moisture the wood has taken on. Posts take the worst of it at ground level, where the wood sits between wet soil and dry air.

What affects the price
Fences are quoted by the run after a look. Height, board profile and how many sides are in scope matter as much as length.

What people ask before booking fence work.
Should a fence be painted or stained?
Stain is generally the more practical choice for wood fencing. It penetrates the timber and fades as it weathers, so recoating later is straightforward. Paint gives a solid, opaque colour and works well on some fences, but once a painted fence starts to peel, preparing it again is considerably more work.
When can a fence be done in Calgary?
The warmer months, roughly May to September, and only when the wood is dry and no rain is expected within the drying window. Fence work is entirely weather-dependent, so we schedule it with contingency rather than pretending otherwise.
Can you coat a brand new fence?
Often not immediately. New pressure-treated fence boards usually need time to dry out and weather before a finish will penetrate properly. We will tell you honestly if waiting will give a better result than doing it now.
Do you paint metal fences and railings?
Yes. Metal needs different preparation from wood — cleaning, removing any rust back to sound material, and a primer suited to the metal before a topcoat. Skipping the rust removal means it comes back through, usually within a season.

We quote for whichever sides you want done, but the second side normally needs your neighbour’s agreement and access. It is worth sorting that out before we arrive, since it affects both the price and the schedule.
